Cakes with Purse-onality

I was asked to make a couple of purse cakes for an enrichment activity. The quilted aqua one on top is made with fondant. The handle is a licorice rope wrapped in fondant and "sewn", though you can't see the "stitching" in the picture. The hardest part was getting the fondant thin enough for the "grey wool piping". I also had to do the piping a little wider to cover the mess of exposed frosting from the gravitational pull of the fondant. I just kind of gave up and threw it on as it was late and my heart wasn't into it. Thank heavens for the internet, the idea came from a youtube video. They just slapped on the fondant pieces, and voila! Magnificent! I on the other hand, not so effortlessly dealt with gravity pulling the fondant sides off and then less of a voila! and more of a, huh?! But it turned out all right, if you don't compare it with the youtube video.
The bottom cake is covered in buttercream with licorice rope handles and piping. The flowers, beaded bottom border, and zipper are fondant. The zipper was pretty fun to do.

These cakes are to die for. Although I do feel a little bad for the others who were assigned to bring cakes as well. Little did they know theirs would have to be in the same room as these little masterpieces. AMAZING! And I am not really believing all that nonsense about the problems you had to cover up.....but thanks for trying to appear human to the rest of us!

The fact that you will even attempt something in the shape of a purse is amazing. I don't do anything other than rounds and 9X13I don't have to watch the YouTube video because I already think yours are masterpieces and then, I will not end up liking the ones on YouTube! Sorry about all that gravity!
